Cougar Radio, the university’s student-run radio station, is on its way to full production, and staffers are preparing to produce podcasts, sporting events, special features, and music.
They expect to be streaming unique content sometime in October, said new radio station manager, Kurtis Kowalski.
“We are so back!” Kowalski exclaimed.
Cougar Radio, located in the Bank’s Student Center, aired its last podcast April 15, 2022, but Kurtis and his team, with the help of advisor Dan Kimbrough, mass Communi9cation and design faculty member, will produce and resurrect podcast segments, new music from local bands and artists, live sports coverage of campus games, and even off-campus events like concerts.
Olivia Smith, production manager, said the staff is motivated to attempt many new projects. “I know the big thing we were talking about maybe having like a TikTok page for the radio so that might be really fun and also on being able to maybe do podcasts with people and do like sports events as well, like making those live and being able to produce it out to people and having people be interested in the radio.”
Staffers are recruiting students from all majors who will round out the staff and spread the word that the radio station is back.
Kowalski said with the use of social media and word of mouth, Cougar Radio will grow a presence in the college community and throughout the Back Mountain. “I think we can do that as well here at Cougar Radio using social media to our advantage to not just expand throughout the student the student population here in Dallas but throughout all of Northeastern Pennsylvania, and I know we have with the with my team we’ve been talking about how we can you know certain things we can do with TikTok or Instagram and how we can get people engaged,” Kowalski said.
Kowalski believes the station will have a great impact on the community and hopes the diverse student population will get involved. He has many both short and long-term goals to achieve, and he hopes with dedication, staffers may be be able to win some some awards, as students making client videos in class and staffers of The Highlander Newspaper regularly do.
Cougar Radio has a very nice space for the collaboration of students, organizations, and anyone who is brought onto a show. Top-of-the-line equipment is used to get the best quality sound and offers the easiest and best editing for the shows so they can go out to people to listen to and enjoy.
“I would like to see the radio station continuing growth hang on I know for a couple of years here there wasn’t much going on with it, so I’m hoping for the radio station reaches a point where everyone around campus has either listened or know somebody involved, and that will continue to grow throughout the years.”
Cougar Radio will also foster communication and collaboration between departments across the campus to provide the best quality content for all listeners. The Athletics Department will participate for sporting events coverage, and the Alumni Relations office may pitch in with show segments
