Junior tennis player Cassie Foy is excelling on the court, but the speech/language pathology major said the achievement is the icing on her collegiate cake.
Foy dropped the MAC championships to Wilkes University’s Katie Lynn 7-5, 3-6, and 2-10 after rallying 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 against second seeded Elizabethtown’s Christine Evangelista in the semifinals.
“I looked forward to playing matches against great competitors and am proud of how I played. I left everything I had out on the courts and am really pleased with how the tournament turned out.”
Foy’s success should not come as a surprise after she was chosen for second-team All-Freedom and won the MAC championships in doubles with sophomore teammate Emily Boro last season.
“Nothing beats that doubles championship when my parents showed up to support me. Winning the championship was amazing, but knowing my parents were there made it an even better experience.”
Foy is not a local in the Back Mountain community: she hails from Southbury, CT. She said she did not make varsity tennis a priority when she began college because the sport was overshadowed by her calling to her future career path.
“I had no idea I would be playing varsity tennis. My main focus was making sure I stay in the SLP program here. Playing varsity is just the icing on the cake.”
Because SLP majors must maintain a 3.3 GPA or better to stay in the program, Foy said balancing academics and athletics can be stressful if she doesn’t carefully manage her time.
Foy’s time management skills also allow her to be involved in clubs such as Peer Advocates, SAFE, HOPE, NSSLHA and the Foreign Language Club.
Foy played varsity tennis throughout high school and was named captain junior and senior year. Her success in college both academically and athletically was foreshadowed in high school when she was recognized as Female Scholar Athlete of her school’s class.
Foy said her joy in her success is second to the gratitude she feels for everyone who has helped during her two short years tennis. She singled out her coach and teammates for praise.
“I’m honestly grateful to be playing tennis for a great coach. I have some of the best teammates I could ask for here. I am happy to get the opportunity to get better with every season and reach my potential before I graduate.”
Foy plans to play both singles and doubles in the spring season.
