In alignment to the University’s longstanding Catholic mission and commitment to a focused academic environment, Misericordia officials will implement a standardized student uniform policy beginning in the fall 2026 semester.
The decision follows a year-long review conducted by the student life office in collaboration with campus ministry, faculty representatives, and student advisory groups. Officials say the new rule is designed to promote unity and reinforce the values of professionalism and modesty within the campus community while also connecting to other Catholic schools, where it is required to wear uniforms, no matter what.
All undergraduate students will be required to adhere to the following dress standards during academic hours, 8:00 am – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday: navy, black or grey slacks, or knee-length skirts falling no more than two inches above the knee, white or light blue collared shirts, official Misericordia University blazer featuring the embroidered university crest, closed-toe shoes, and optional university cardigans during the colder months. Clothing items outside of the uniform that is Misericordia style (bought at the campus store) is allowed on casual days and weekends.
With the exception of sports practices, athletic wear, hooded sweatshirts (not issued by the university), and clothing displaying non-university logos will not be permitted during designated hours.
The policy also outlines expectations for personal presentation. Hair color should remain as natural as possible, and accessories should be minimal and non-disruptive. Officials will soon release a list of approved items, which include ties, socks that are available in three standard lengths and sizes, and different outerwear appropriate for weather conditions.
Officials will transition to the new policy slowly. In fall of 2026, all incoming first-year students will be required to comply with all the faculty and staff, and in the spring of 2027, the policy expanded to sophomores, requiring them to fully be in uniform after winter break. Fall of 2027 is when juniors are required to obey the policy of uniforms, and by fall of 2028, officials expect full graduate and undergraduate compliance.
There will be a grace period alongside the red zone during the first part of the fall 2026, allowing students time to obtain the required items.
Uniform pieces will be available for purchase through the Misericordia University Store at the beginning July 2026, shipping to students’ homes so they are prepared for when they come into the semester. An estimated cost for a complete set ranges from $200-$1000, depending on size and what the individual student will need. Athletes will need more since they need travel and other practice gear, and also different clubs will get matching sweaters to show what they are a part of.

Students who do not meet uniform standards will be asked to leave class and return to their residence halls (homes if they live off campus) to change before returning and attending class. Repeated violations will be referred to the dean and will also be reported to campus life and athletics officials if relevant.
Campus life staff and designated university personnel will assist in ensuring compliance, especially during the initial rollout period.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to creating an environment where students can focus on academic and personal growth without unnecessary distractions,” said Press Secretary for the Dean of Students Sara Hucklebee Flanders. “We believe a unified standard of dress will strengthen our sense of community and shared purpose,” Flanders said.
Campus Ministry officials have also emphasized the connection between policy and the university’s values.
“Intentional presence reflects respect for oneself and others within both academic and spiritual spaces,” said Campus Ministry Coordinator Joe Lawson.
Officials said when students wake up and can’t decide what to wear they are late to class, no longer have to deal with this problem.
Each month students can take part in Spirit Days when they will not have to wear designated uniforms. Formal Fridays will be a new addition to the calendar. Students will have to wear all parts of their uniforms (blazer, ties, dresses, etc.), while the rest of the week, they will not be required to be in the blazer, tie or a dress.
Officials will release further details, including a complete list of approved uniform items and sizing information, in coming months.
