Could you describe the team’s reaction when guys found out you made the NCAA tournament?
I personally was ecstatic. When we lost in the conference tournament, it was low chance for us to make the big dance. We were a lock for the ECAC’s, which is basically a regional NIT, but that’s like going to a middle school dance instead of prom. Plus it was our first at large bid for the tournament which shows how well we played during the season to gain the respect of a national committee.
What was the most exciting moment for you personally this season?
When Kevin Matlon scored the game tying goal against Montclair State in the NCAA tournament less than a minute after they scored. We lost on PK’s but that was probably the most excited I was this year.
What was your favorite game in the regular season?
My favorite game was one I did not even play in because of my broken hand which was when we beat Eastern 4-0 at their place. They are one of our biggest rivals and I love crushing them. Plus it had huge implications for us getting selected for the tournament.
How do you prepare for games both mentally and physically?
To prepare for a game I just do my work in practice and then before the game, I listen to music and just relax myself. I’ve been here long enough to reach a point where any game is just another game. No need to be more nervous and then I play relaxed.
Looking back into preseason, did you approach this season differently than others in the past?
I probably prepared for this season more than others physically. I was in the gym almost everyday and it lead to a good season.
Do you feel you accomplished all your goals for the season both personally and as a team?
Personally, I achieved most of my goals. I unfortunately broke my hand which set me back but I was able to return and help give our team a chance. Team wise, we fell short but not due to lack of effort. It takes a little luck to win three straight and this year some things just didn’t go our way.
When you reflect on your career at MU, what is the number thing you are/will be most proud of?
Of my four years, I’m most proud of being part of this brotherhood. I’m so proud of my team and know they will go on to do great things. Soccer ends, but the connections I’ve made with current and past teammates won’t. I was fortunate to be part of two conference championship teams and three NCAA tournament teams. Soccer is what brought us together but the fact that my team has been filled with good people is what keeps us together and I look forward to next year and seeing them bring the conference championship back to where it belongs. Go Cougars!
