Starting next semester, there will a new requirement for Misericordia students: registering their relationship status.

All students, regardless of class ranking, must register their relationship status with Darcy Brodmerkel, head of Student Engagement, beginning with the fall 2020 semester.

Brodmerkel explained the link to the Google Form will be sent out before classes begin and must be completed by the end of the first week of classes. She said there will be four options to choose: taken, married, it’s complicated and single.

The purpose of this requirement is for Brodmerkel and the Student Engagement staff to gain more knowledge about the student body in order to offer more activities, especially more couples-themed activities.

“I hope the students will understand why we are requiring this, so we can get a better understanding of what kinds of things they want to see happen on campus,” she said.

Brodmerkel sees no reason why this new requirement will cause problems; however, she can’t promise the results will stay confidential, especially since her email was hacked over winter break.

“I think we’re just crossing our fingers and hoping for the best,” she said.

If there is any change in relationship status, students must update Brodmerkel as soon as possible.

“We want to make sure we stay updated so, again, we can come up with activities catered more to the students’ personal lives,” she explained.

Student Government also hopes to get in on the action by helping to create the form and reviewing the results before reporting back to Brodmerkel.

Sally Single, president of the Student Government Association, doesn’t understand the point of the requirement at all.

“I just feel like it’s my business who I date,” Single said. “You can have couples’ activities without requiring us to tell you if we’re dating. People will still show up. I just don’t get it, but I guess we’re stuck with it now.”

The Google Form will become available at 12:00 am EST the Sunday before classes start. This will be a requirement for students in order to attend classes and all professors have been asked to check with their students to be sure they have completed the form.

Any questions regarding the Google Form may be directed to Brodmerkel or Single.
