All students – with or without athletic experience – can sign up to play intramural volleyball, kickball and even softball if they act fast.
Students may sign up with a group of teammates or as single players.
“People want to put full teams in. A lot of other kids decide to sign up as individuals,” said organizer and women’s head soccer coach Mark Stauffer. “When they do that we place them on teams.”
Stauffer is tasked with organizing teams and creating schedules, which can be dicey because games have to be juggled with athletic teams’ schedules.
“Then it is scheduling either gymnasium time or field time so we can get the fields that we need to run the events,” said Stauffer. “The next step is the scheduling of the events and finally the actual running of the events.”
While some team sign-ups are complete, other sports are still in need of plays to fill the rosters, said Stauffer.
“We are in the middle of softball right now. If anybody wants, to sign up late, they can do that too,” said Stauffer.
Late signees will not be guaranteed a spot on the team of their choice.
Stauffer may need to place that person on a team that needs more support.
“We certainly would not want that to be a reason why a person could not participate. We actually have a lot of people sign up that way,’ he said.
Volleyball and kickball are also available for students during the fall semester.
Soccer, basketball, wiffleball, Frisbee, golf and powderpuff foot- ball will be available in the spring.
Most games for intramural sports are held in the gymnasium in the Anderson Sports and Health Center or on one of the sports fields on campus.
Games are usually held on week nights at 5 p.m. There is no weekend play.
Playoff games will take place as long as enough players compete. For example, if only four teams sign up for a sport, every team would play the others twice.
“I will do the playoffs for every sport if there are enough players. If not then we just play a regular season,” said Stauffer.
Stauffer asks students interested in a sport that is not offered to contact him so it he knows to offer it the following year.
